The Village of Bellport Community Center has completed major renovations after receiving $187,500 in state grant funding, village officials announced.
The improvements were supported through a New York State and Municipal Facilities Grant, with the village contributing an additional $5,600. Bellport Department of Public Works employees also assisted by providing carpentry work, helping complete the project efficiently and cost-effectively.
The renovations were aimed at improving safety, accessibility and functionality at the community center, which serves as a gathering space for residents, organizations and public events.
Work included insulating and sheet-rocking the open ceiling above the stage, replacing flooring throughout the first floor, and repairing and repainting the bathrooms. New fire and carbon monoxide detectors were installed, along with upgrades to portions of the electrical system.
The center also received an updated sound system to better support meetings, performances and community programs. Improvements were made to the stage and storage areas, and plumbing work was completed to relocate and reinstall radiators. Installation of a new fireproof stage curtain is currently underway as the final phase of the project.
State Sen. Dean Murray, R-3rd Senate District, said the renovations demonstrate the impact of state and local partnerships.
“This project is a great example of how state and local partnerships can come together to deliver meaningful improvements to our communities,” Murray said. “The Bellport Community Center is an important gathering space, and these upgrades ensure it will continue to serve residents for many years to come.”
Mayor Maureen Veitch was recognized for overseeing the grant funds and guiding the project through completion.
“When government works across party lines, communities benefit,” Veitch said. “I’m grateful to everyone, especially Senator Dean Murray, who played a role in bringing this to fruition for the public good.”
Village officials said the renovations represent a significant investment in local infrastructure and will help ensure the community center remains a safe, modern and welcoming space for residents of all ages.
The building hosts a variety of civic meetings, recreational activities and special events, and officials said the upgrades will allow it to better serve the public for years to come.
