New leadership took charge this week in the Suffolk Legislature, with a Republican majority assembling its team for the Class of 2026 and signaling a continued emphasis on public safety, fiscal discipline, and infrastructure.

Among those elevated was South Shore legislator Jim Mazzarella, who was named Deputy Presiding Officer, a role that places him at the center of legislative decision-making while maintaining his focus on the Third Legislative District, which includes Mastic Beach, Shirley, and surrounding communities.

Mazzarella said he intends to serve as a bridge between leadership and rank-and-file lawmakers. “I will strive to be communicative to all legislators and be sure they receive the support they need to properly represent the residents of their districts and Suffolk County as a whole,” he said.

Mazzarella outlined a detailed list of district priorities, including ensuring the groundbreaking and construction of the new Smith Point Bridge, expanding sewer infrastructure further south into Mastic Beach, and continuing to advocate for additional law enforcement resources on local roadways. He also cited funding for flood mitigation and coastal resiliency projects, completion of a new pavilion at Cupsogue Beach, and further improvements at Smith Point County Park. In addition, he pledged to advocate for federal monies to find and create solutions to local traffic issues.

The broader leadership team will be led by Presiding Officer Anthony Piccirillo, with Majority Leader Nick Caracappa and a committee structure emphasizing public safety, public works, and economic development.

Mazzarella also emphasized continued collaboration with County Executive Ed Romaine. “I look forward to joining him in all the good work that he has begun and to continue partnering with him in ensuring a safer and more affordable Suffolk County,” he said.

“Since taking the legislative majority for the first time after 16 years, Republicans have delivered results,” said Suffolk GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia. “The Republican Majority has added more cops, more detectives, and more prosecutors to keep residents safe. The GOP has reallocated resources properly, including funding crime-fighting tools like ShotSpotter. A safer Suffolk is the foundation of a stronger and more affordable Suffolk.”

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
