William Floyd High School student wins local Omega Psi Phi essay contest

Andriana Perez Senior Student at William Floyd High School | William Floyd High School

William Floyd High School senior Andriana Perez has been named the first-place winner in an essay contest organized by the Chi Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The competition required students to address the question, “In a world powered by Artificial Intelligence, what does it mean to lead with integrity and purpose?” Essays were evaluated on thesis development, progression, readability, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Perez received a $300 prize for her winning entry and has been invited to attend a ceremony at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library on December 20. She will now advance to represent the Chi Rho Chapter in the 2nd District competition. Success at this level could provide her with additional scholarships and an opportunity to compete nationally.

"Andriana is a member of the WFHS Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) and hopes to garner acceptance into one of the United States service academies after graduation. Andriana attended William Floyd Schools K-12 including Tangier Smith Elementary School and William Paca Middle School."

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., known as the first international fraternal organization founded at a historically black college, has over 750 chapters worldwide. The Chi Rho chapter serves Suffolk County and opened this scholarship contest to African American and Hispanic high school seniors throughout the county.

"Congratulations, Andriana, and best of luck in the 2nd District competition!"

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
