The State University of New York at Stony Brook will launch its first "Back the Brook" 24-hour crowdfunding campaign on November 19. The initiative aims to support student clubs, organizations, and athletic programs by encouraging alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to make donations directly to specific groups.

A total of 22 student clubs and organizations, along with all 18 NCAA Division I athletic programs at Stony Brook, are participating in the fundraiser. Each group has outlined goals for how additional funds would benefit their activities. While these groups receive funding from the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), that support does not always cover all costs associated with hosting events or participating in competitions.

To boost contributions during "Back the Brook," about $35,000 in matching funds and challenges have been made available through the generosity of the Stony Brook community and Alumni Association. Bonus funding will be awarded to the top three student groups with the most unique donors during the event.

Early giving is already open online for those who wish to contribute before November 19. An anonymous supporter has offered a challenge: between now and November 18 at 11:59 pm, the top three groups or teams with the most unique supporters will share $1,500 in bonus funds. Additional matches and challenges are expected to be announced on November 19 on the event’s website.

“Back the Brook reflects the very essence of Stony Brook, a community that leads with generosity and heart,” said USG President Sarah Elbaroudy. “Every gift strengthens the foundation of student life, empowering Seawolves to lead, create and inspire change. Through giving, we affirm our shared belief that Stony Brook’s greatest legacy is its people — a community united by purpose, pride and possibility.”

An in-person celebration hosted by Stony Brook’s Advancement team will take place from noon to 2 pm at both the Student Activities Center Shore Club and Union Lobby on November 19. The event will feature a DJ, free food, activities, t-shirts for attendees, and special cords for seniors who donate ($10.25 for class of 2025 seniors; $10.26 for class of 2026).

"Back the Brook" is one of two major crowdfunding events organized by Stony Brook University Advancement this academic year; it will be followed by "Giving Day" on March 25, 2026.

Stony Brook University serves over 27,000 students as part of the State University of New York system. It is recognized as New York’s flagship public university with notable research activity across various disciplines.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
