Stony Brook University honors over 150 faculty at annual promotion and tenure event

More than 150 faculty members at Stony Brook University were recognized for their recent promotions during an event held earlier this semester. The celebration, now in its second year, highlighted achievements in research, scholarship, teaching, and service across a range of academic disciplines.

Faculty promoted included those rising to the ranks of associate professor, associate clinical professor, or associate librarian, as well as those attaining full professor, full clinical professor, or full librarian status. Of the more than 150 individuals honored, 50 also received tenure.

The ceremony was co-hosted by Carl W. Lejuez, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and William Wertheim, MD, Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine.

“If I could say one thing today, it’s to tell you to take a moment and celebrate this amazing accomplishment. We celebrate your research and scholarship and take inspiration from your commitment to mentoring and what you have done for your students,” said Lejuez. “We love to talk about rankings, but what makes Stony Brook special is the people and your commitment to collaboration, education, mentoring, and scholarship.”

At Stony Brook University, tenure-track faculty generally have seven years to demonstrate excellence in teaching; service to their discipline or the university (including clinical service); and contributions through research or scholarship such as grants awarded or peer-reviewed publications.

“Each of you is committed to pursue knowledge, to pursue wisdom and to pass it on to your students,” said Wertheim. “We are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant academic community, not just for your ideas and not just for your innovation, but also for your commitment to doing the right things for the right reasons. I look forward to seeing how your work will continue to shape the future of our university and our broader communities.”
