On October 4, the William Floyd Colonials varsity football team won against Longwood in Parkway Power Bowl XIV, with a final score of 21-18. The victory keeps the Colonials at the top of Division I midway through the regular season.
The annual Parkway Power Bowl is a rivalry game between William Floyd and Longwood, two schools connected by William Floyd Parkway and both served by the Suffolk County Police Department. This matchup not only offers local bragging rights and a trophy for the winning school but also has implications for playoff seeding. With this win, William Floyd has secured its tenth consecutive Parkway Power Bowl victory and now leads the series 12-2.
Before the game began at Lincoln Avenue Sports Complex, officers from the Suffolk County Police Department conducted the coin toss in front of a full crowd.
During the first half, both teams were kept scoreless until Longwood made a field goal late in the second quarter, giving them a 3-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Ja’Quan Thomas of William Floyd scored on a 72-yard run to put his team ahead. Longwood responded in the fourth quarter with a touchdown drive to retake the lead.
The Colonials answered with another scoring drive that ended with Thomas’s second rushing touchdown. Aisays Wallace then added another rushing touchdown to extend William Floyd’s lead to 21-10. Longwood narrowed the gap with a late touchdown and two-point conversion but was unable to recover an onside kick in the closing moments.
Thomas finished with 214 rushing yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns. Wallace contributed 102 rushing yards on nine carries along with one touchdown; he and Aidan Williams each recorded one sack on defense.
William Floyd will play its next game against Lindenhurst on October 10.
The school expressed appreciation to both the William Floyd Alumni Association for providing the Parkway Power Bowl trophy and to the Suffolk County Police Department for their continued support during this event and throughout the year.
