The Brookhaven Highway Department has completed a $482,000 project in Mastic aimed at replacing a failing culvert and improving stormwater management. The work took place on Poospatuck Lane, where the department replaced the old culvert and constructed a bio-retention area at Second Neck Creek. This new feature is designed to filter and absorb stormwater runoff before it enters the creek.
According to officials, this project is part of an ongoing initiative by the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department to address water quality issues throughout the town. The Division of Stormwater Management oversees these large-scale projects, which focus on reducing runoff effects and enhancing natural environments.
Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro said, “Protecting Brookhaven’s vital waterways and infrastructure to prevent damage by large-scale storm events is a main priority of my office. This area of Mastic has been repeatedly impacted by saltwater intrusion during high tides. Following the stormwater control improvements completed by the Highway Department, Poospatuck Lane will be much safer and more eco-friendly.”
Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig added, “This was a significant project, one that greatly benefits the Mastic community by reducing flooding and improving water quality. I applaud the highway superintendent, his team and the entire department for their continued efforts in addressing these critical issues.”
