Students in the William Floyd School District participated in Patriot Day activities on September 11 to remember and honor those affected by the terrorist attacks in 2001. Elementary schools across the district used the day to discuss heroism and reflect on the events of September 11.
At Moriches Elementary School, Ms. Wickers' fourth-grade class explored the concept of a hero and completed projects about the Twin Towers. Students at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School also created projects to honor heroes.
Teachers guided students through various activities, including making 9/11 memorial ribbons and mosaics, wearing red, white, and blue, watching videos about first responders, reading books such as "Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey," singing patriotic songs, and writing letters to local community heroes like first responders and veterans.
Ms. Lisa Gonzalez's class at John S. Hobart Elementary School read about how the decommissioned John J. Harvey Fireboat assisted in rescue efforts during 9/11 and created memorial ribbons.
"On Thursday, September 11, elementary students across the school district recognized Patriot Day, a Day of Remembrance and Service of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, a day in which our nation – and the world – changed forever."
"Teachers and students used the day in a positive way – they learned about what it means to be a hero, created beautiful 9/11 memorial ribbons and mosaics, wore red, white and blue in honor of the day and all those lost and affected, watched videos about the first responders, read books such as Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey, sang patriotic songs, and wrote letters to local community heroes such as first responders and veterans."
