William Floyd varsity field hockey team focuses on playoffs with veteran leadership

The William Floyd varsity field hockey team enters the 2025 fall season with a roster dominated by experienced juniors and seniors, most of whom are returning from last year. Head coach Maria Carucci is leading the Colonials as they aim to secure a spot in the playoffs, which has narrowly eluded them for the past two seasons.

Among the key players is senior Gianna Trotta, who is in her fourth year on the team. Last season, Trotta scored seven goals and six assists and received All-County Honorable Mention honors. She was also named one of Newsday's top-50 field hockey players. Other returning seniors include Samantha Seaman, another four-year player recognized as an All-County Honorable Mention in 2024; Juliana Dolezal, a three-year player who earned All-Division honors; Vanessa DeStefano, also a three-year player who received All-Classification honors; and Kaleigh Benson, who contributed three goals last season.

Coach Carucci highlighted the team's offseason commitment. "Most of the student-athletes played in winter, spring and summer leagues over the past year," she said.

The Colonials started their 2025 campaign with an away game at Northport on September 3. Their home opener took place on September 5 against Centereach, resulting in a 2-1 win with both Benson and Trotta recording one goal and one assist each. Kalina-Sky Permenter made two saves as goalkeeper. On September 9, William Floyd defeated Lindenhurst 3-1, led by Trotta’s two goals and one assist. Riley Meyer added a goal while Avalynn Furman contributed an assist.

Coach Carucci noted that familiarity among team members should contribute to efficient play this season as they pursue their playoff ambitions.
