Stony Brook University has been recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) with a place on the 2025 Transfer Honor Roll. The university is among 251 colleges and universities nationwide to receive this designation, which is based on 40 metrics related to transfer student support and success. These include college cost, financial aid, campus life for transfers, admission practices, and bachelor’s degree completion.
The Transfer Honor Roll acknowledges institutions that create strong pathways for community college students transferring to four-year programs. PTK uses data from the National Student Clearinghouse and information provided through its PTK Connect tool to determine the honorees. Colleges are given a Transfer Friendliness Rating, and those in the top 25 percent are selected for the honor roll.
"In 2025, Stony Brook launched a new PTK Scholarship for in- and out-of-state students. Domestic students from two-year colleges with a 3.5 GPA are eligible to apply for the scholarship; over 100 students were awarded the scholarship for the Fall 2025 semester."
Stony Brook participates in the SUNY Transfer Match Program, which helps match expected graduates of SUNY community colleges with participating four-year campuses for direct admission. The university also offers engagement opportunities such as on-campus and virtual visit programs, including events like Basketball Tailgate Night for prospective transfer students.
Phi Theta Kappa was established as an honor society recognizing academic achievement at associate degree-granting colleges. It currently has more than 4.4 million members across nearly 1,250 chapters in 11 countries.
