How did the Democrat Party end up with a Communist and open anti-Semite as its newest rising star?
How did the party of my youth, and much of my adulthood, that stood with working people, farmers, families, unions, and small business come to be the party of Communists, Marxists, and Socialists? All the '–ists' run together in a uniquely anti-American platform. It has been shocking to watch!
Why did the traditional leaders of the party largely support this turn away from American values rather than bring the party to heel for decency’s sake? For their own sake?
The Party now has Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Sen. Bernie Sanders as standard bearers. Two politicians who want to impose the opposite of American values on all of us. They drip with disdain for America. They don’t want Americans to be educated and financially independent. They, coupled with the national Teacher’s Union, want to keep large swaths of Americans in a permanent state of poverty and dependence on the government.
And now, with AOC and Bernie’s support, the largest city in America, New York City, is on the verge of electing Zohran Mamdani, an open Communist, to be mayor. Commie Mamdani they call him and his platform and history show this nickname is spot on. The City of Buffalo is also on the verge of electing an open Socialist as mayor. If successful, that will make NY’s two largest cities run by the ‘-ists’. What is to become of New York?
In graduate school, I remember then Democrat Governor Mario Cuomo coming to the cancer hospital where I was studying and giving such a powerful speech. I don’t remember what he said, but I sure remember how he said it.
Later, in the late 90s, I was at President Clinton’s “apology tour” speech in downtown Buffalo. Again, I recall the feeling of hearing such a powerful Democrat speaker who seemed to speak directly to us in the stands. After the speech, I had an opportunity to meet him ever so briefly and got one of the signature Clinton two-handed handshakes.
I was, and am, a registered Democrat though my party has left me in the dust. I am not alone in this feeling. We all saw that in the recent election where Democrats just like me left the party in droves and voted for President Trump.
During my years working for Democrat NYS and Federal elected officials, and in and out of the County Democrat Committee, the Party was partisan for sure, all parties are, but they were not universally ugly, mean spirited, and anti-American. Make no mistake the Democrat Party has largely become these things. If you don’t tow the party line 100% you are a Nazi. I’ve been called a “gender traitor” and had my mental health questioned by people who used to be my friends. Why? Because I have refused to bow down to the new religion that is the far, far left Socio-Marxist takeover of the Democrat Party.
I look at what I used to be enthusiastically and proudly involved in and do not recognize what it has become. I’m actually appalled by it. When people ask me about those times, I am quick to say that I worked in it when they were reasonable people. When deals and lunches across the aisle were the norm. When, even when fierce disagreement happened, it never meant the other side was evil or that veiled, or not so veiled, threats again them and their families should be made. I am embarrassed at what my party has become. They should be embarrassed, too. Will they wake up and return to the bread and butter common sense positions that most Americans support? There is no indication of that happening yet.
