Active duty service members, veterans, and their families who are enrolled in or considering any State University of New York (SUNY) institution, including Stony Brook University, now have access to a new online resource at suny.edu/military. The website was launched on July 21 following an announcement by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
The site offers information about academic credit for military service and experience, tuition assistance programs, specialized scholarships, and dedicated campus services such as veteran lounges and associations across all 64 SUNY campuses. It also connects users with county-level veteran services to help them remain close to home and community. The website will be updated regularly as new resources become available.
“We continue to rely so much on our veterans and military to protect everything we hold sacred, and it is a priority of my administration to make sure we help our military-connected New Yorkers have a smooth transition to their next career,” Governor Hochul said. “This one-stop shop from SUNY is easy to follow and helps guide service members and their families and puts them on a path to a rewarding degree or credential.”
Thirty-seven SUNY campuses currently grant academic credit for military training and experience. The new website features a searchable tool that allows visitors to identify which credits may apply based on their background. Support services tailored for veterans—such as student associations and dedicated offices—are also highlighted.
“SUNY provides a wide array of services for all those who stepped up and answered the call to serve our nation,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. “From tuition assistance and specialized scholarships, to lounges and clubs, to credit for prior learning, it is important that every service member and veteran knows about the great programs at their disposal at every SUNY campus. We honor our veterans and service members, and our campus communities are richer for their presence.”
Stony Brook University offers its own set of resources for veteran students through Undergraduate Admissions—which provides guidance on applications, benefits, tuition support—and through the Office of Military and Veteran Student Services.
Governor Hochul recently expanded access to affordable education via the Veterans Tuition Assistance Program; these changes took effect July 1.
