William Floyd Board introduces student members in reorganization for new school year

Board Reorg | WFSD

The William Floyd Board of Education conducted its annual reorganization meeting for the 2025-26 school year. Newly re-elected trustees April Coppola, Lorraine Mentz, and Luis J. Soto began their new three-year terms by taking the oath of office.

The board appointed officers for the upcoming school year: April Coppola as President, Robert Taiani as Vice President, Kevin Coster as Superintendent of Schools, Carolyn Visintin as District Clerk, Michelle Romanosky as District Treasurer, and Mary Sidaras as Deputy District Treasurer.

A significant addition this year is the appointment of student members to the board. This initiative aligns with a new law mandating that all school districts with high schools include at least one non-voting high school student on their boards. The goal is to incorporate a student perspective in discussions and offer students leadership experience. Nasyah Crosby, Muhammad Saad, and Andrew Winter were appointed as the inaugural student board members.

Carolyn Visintin administered the oath of office to trustees Lorraine Mentz, Luis J. Soto, and April Coppola.

The board also set its meeting schedule for the academic year. Meetings will be held at William Floyd High School's Jeananne Dawson Memorial Library in Mastic Beach. Public sessions begin at 7 pm unless otherwise noted.

Meeting dates for 2025-26 are August 26 (6 pm public session), September 16, October 7 & 28, November 18, December 16, January 13, February 10 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), March 10 & 24 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), April 21 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), May 12 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), and June 16. The annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election is scheduled for May 19, 2026.

In attendance taking the oath were officers Michelle Romanosky (District Treasurer), Mary Sidaras (Deputy District Treasurer), April Coppola (President), Kevin Coster (Superintendent of Schools), and Robert Taiani (Vice President).
