Stony Brook unveils new landmark letters enhancing campus spirit

Usama M. Shaikh Assistant Chief Diversity Officer | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University has introduced its new Landmark Letters, a significant addition to the campus aimed at enhancing school spirit and community identity. These bold letters, spelling out "S-B-U," were unveiled on May 22 in front of the Stony Brook Union.

Interim President Richard McCormick highlighted the symbolic importance of these letters: “Earlier this year, we welcomed the addition of the Wolfie Statue, sharing pride in our university and of our beloved mascot. Now, we welcome the SBU Landmark Letters, embellished with bold lettering and a brazen shield.” He further stated that these letters serve as a warm welcome to all visitors to the university.

Vice President for Student Affairs Rick Gatteau expressed enthusiasm about their potential impact: “Our Landmark Letters were brought about to symbolize Stony Brook University pride in a big way, reinforcing our school identity. I know these letters will quickly become a much-loved asset to our campus community."

Undergraduate Student Government President Nistha Boghra shared her hopes for future connections fostered by this installation: “Just like Wolfie brings us together in the present, the Landmark Letters will connect us across generations.”

These installations are expected to play an important role during major events such as school tours, orientation sessions, and graduation ceremonies. They aim to unite current students with alumni and prospective students while strengthening Seawolf pride throughout various aspects of campus life.
