Stony Brook hosts annual research day featuring student researchers

Stony Brook's Department of Surgery and Renaissance School of Medicine held their Annual Research Day on May 7 at Stony Brook Hospital’s MART Auditorium. The event included ten oral presentations and numerous research abstracts submitted by medical students and residents. Timothy J. Pawlik, MD, PhD, MPH, delivered the keynote speech.

The day began with remarks from Professor and Department of Surgery Chair Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos, MD, FACS, and Vice Dean of Research Susan Hedayati, MD, MHSc. Dr. Pawlik followed with his address titled "Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: Morphology, Genetics, and the Surgeon." He is a professor in the College of Medicine and surgeon-in-chief at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Nicholas Ahn, MD, and Artem Shmelev, MD moderated the first Oral Presentation Session. This was followed by an Oral Poster Competition judged by Angela A. Kokkosis, MD; Konstantinos Spaniolas, MD; Deborah Nagle, MD; and Randeep S. Jawa, MD.

The event continued with a second session moderated by Christopher Vanison, MD, and Edmund Lee, MD. The day concluded with announcing the 2025 Research Day award winners.
