Tangier Smith Elementary celebrates Earth Day with family night

Lorraine Mentz Trustee | William Floyd School District

Tangier Smith Elementary School recently hosted a "Go Green, Go Global" family night in celebration of Earth Day. The event featured activities and presentations focused on environmental awareness and conservation. Attendees were encouraged to participate in various educational activities while contributing over 200 pairs of socks as an entrance fee, which will be donated to students in need during the colder months.

The school transformed several classrooms into biomes such as rainforests, African savannahs, oceans, grasslands, and the Arctic for exploration. Teachers decorated their classrooms accordingly and wore thematic attire. Students and families engaged in scavenger hunts and learned about each biome's uniqueness and protection methods.

Cynthia Seibold, founder and executive director of the Balloon Mission, attended the event to discuss the environmental impact of balloon releases. The organization advocates for alternatives to balloon releases and provides ways to recycle balloon debris. Participants signed a pledge to use a recycling bin donated by the organization for proper disposal of balloons at home or school.

Prismatic Magic’s Laser Safari was another highlight of the evening. It offered an adventure through ecosystems like the African Serengeti and South American Amazon using laser animations accompanied by music videos. This presentation aimed to educate attendees about different ecosystems' wildlife.

Additional activities included a live habitat walkthrough, an Earth Day meditation room, crafts, and snacks in the cafeteria. Tangier Smith teachers and staff organized these events for students and families who enjoyed participating in this Earth Day-themed celebration.
