Stony Brook University's American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) chapter participated in the 2025 AIChE Mid-Atlantic Student Regional Conference, hosted by Lehigh University on April 25 and 26. The conference provided opportunities for students to engage in various competitions, present research, attend career fairs, and network with peers and industry professionals.
Professor Stefanos (Steve) Nitodas from the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering served as the faculty advisor for the group of 18 students attending the event. He also took on a role as a Chem-E-Car safety judge. "Our students worked hard in preparing for the competitions, and the knowledge and hands-on experience they have acquired through this process will be beneficial for them at the beginning of their professional path," Nitodas stated.
The Stony Brook AIChE chapter had two teams participating in the ChemE Jeopardy competition. Team 1 achieved second place, earning them a spot at the National ChemE Jeopardy competition scheduled for November at the 2025 AIChE Student Annual Conference in Boston—a first-time achievement for their team.
In addition to their success in ChemE Jeopardy, AIChE-SBU's Team 2 delivered a record-setting performance by placing third nationally in the virtual regional ChemE-Sports Spring 2025 competition.
The chapter's Chem-E-Car team introduced its new car named Mystery Machine during Regionals but did not advance to Nationals. However, they are focused on enhancing their design for future competitions.
Three students from SBU excelled in presenting their research during the poster session. The chapter plans to increase participation in research presentations at upcoming conferences.
