Three William Floyd school community members – Gary Bretton, Teresa Jackson, and Lorraine Mentz – have been recognized by SCOPE Education Services as "Shining Stars" for the 2024-25 academic year. Each honoree received accolades for their contributions to education within the district.
Gary Bretton, the principal of the William Floyd Learning Center, received the Administrator Service Award. He has been with the William Floyd School District since 2013, initially serving as an assistant principal. Bretton has been leading the WFLC since it opened in 2017 and has been acknowledged for his dedication and leadership, which have positively impacted students' success.
Teresa Jackson, a long-term employee in the William Floyd School District's business office, was awarded the Support Staff Service Award. Over her 19-year tenure, she has notably transformed the payroll department into a more efficient, professional, and customer-focused operation, demonstrating her commitment to her colleagues and the district.
Lorraine Mentz, a trustee of the William Floyd Board of Education, received the School Board Service Award. With over 23 years in the community and eight years as a trustee, Mentz has been a strong advocate for public education and student welfare. Her ongoing commitment to education extends to her role as administrative director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association. This marks her second recognition by SCOPE Education Services.
Each honoree has been celebrated by their peers and the Board of Education for their dedicated service to the William Floyd School District.
