William Floyd School District presents proposed 2025-26 budget with zero tax increase

Kevin Meyer Board Member | William Floyd School District

The William Floyd School District has outlined details of the upcoming budget vote and trustee election set for May 20, 2025. The proposed budget for the 2025-26 school year anticipates no tax increase for district residents, marking the third occurrence of such a proposal within a five-year span. The past reductions included significant decreases of 4.86% and 17.88% in different years, followed by a modest increase of less than one percent last year.

Scheduled alongside the budget vote is a proposition to establish a $5 million Repair Reserve fund targeted at non-recurring repairs for capital improvements or equipment within the district. The proposal aims for a ten-year term with the capability to earn interest, funded via current or forthcoming budget appropriations or other uninhibited revenues.

Also on the ballot is the election of three trustees to the Board of Education, whose current occupants, April Coppola, Lorraine Mentz, and Luis J. Soto, are running unopposed. Their new terms, if elected, will span from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028.

The annual budget hearing is scheduled for May 13, 2025, at 6:30 pm within the William Floyd High School library. Voters can cast their ballots on May 20 from 7 am to 9 pm at the school’s east lobby.

Voter eligibility requires individuals to be United States citizens at least 18 years old, residing in the district for a minimum of 30 days, and registered with either the school district’s Board of Registry or the Suffolk County Board of Elections. Registration is facilitated at any William Floyd school until May 13, 2025, and at the District Office until May 15, 2025, concluding at 5 pm. Registration at the Suffolk County Board of Elections will remain open until the date of the vote.

Additional voter information and registration forms are available on the district's official website or from District Clerk Carolyn Visintin at (631) 874-1117.

The proposed budget amounts to $325,979,724, covering the fiscal year 2025-26 for the William Floyd School District. For those interested in more information, including absentee applications, resources are available on the district's website.
