Stony Brook University Hospital has again been awarded the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) Center of Excellence designation, a recognition given to institutions demonstrating top-tier standards in obstetric anesthesia care. This is the second time SBUH has received this honor, highlighting its commitment to excellence in clinical practice and continuous education in obstetric anesthesiology. Notably, Stony Brook is the sole hospital in Suffolk County to achieve this designation.

William A. Wertheim, MD, MBA, executive vice president of Stony Brook Medicine, praised the hospital's anesthesia team for their pivotal role in patient care, stating that the recertification "is a testament to their attentive efforts to provide the best quality of care for women and ensure that safety and excellence in patient care remains our top priority."

Carol Gomes, CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital, emphasized the hospital's dedication to maternal and infant safety. She noted, "Our team is honored to be recognized for its ongoing work to keep the mothers and babies we care for safe. Women on Long Island should walk into our facility knowing they will receive compassionate care, collaborative decision-making, and comfort and privacy for both them and their newborn."

Stony Brook University Hospital is one of the 13 global institutions and obstetric anesthesia programs that have renewed their Center of Excellence designation since it was first received in 2020. This recognition is valid for four years.

The SOAP Center of Excellence designation, established in 2018, sets a benchmark for expected obstetric anesthesia care to elevate standards nationally and internationally. It serves as a quality metric for providers of obstetric anesthesia care. The designation assesses several aspects including staffing, equipment, protocols, simulation and training, emergency management, and quality assurance, based on expert consensus and evidence-based recommendations.

Stony Brook University Hospital, with 624 beds, is Long Island’s major academic health center and serves as a tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center. The facility includes specialized centers such as the Stony Brook University Heart Institute, Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital, Neurosciences Institute, and more.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
