William Floyd Elementary School recently marked its third year as a "No Place for Hate" institution with a schoolwide event dedicated to the anti-bullying program. The initiative encourages students to foster kindness and inclusivity among their peers. This program is coordinated by Principal Dr. Keith Fasciana, Assistant Principal Valerie Ennis, and Social Worker Heather Cleary, alongside a committee of responsible fifth-grade students who act as positive role models.
As part of the celebration during "Start with Hello" week, numerous activities focused on promoting kindness took place. Students learned about and signed the "No Place for Hate" pledge, which emphasizes inclusion, acceptance, and reporting discrimination or bullying. They also expressed ways to contribute to a supportive school environment on colored handprint cutouts.
The project sparked meaningful discussions among students about kindness, differences, and inclusion. These handprints were displayed near a mural crafted by art teacher Ms. Linda Lutzen. "This serves as a visual reminder to our students that our school does not tolerate any type of hate," said Ms. Cleary.
A bilingual approach was also adopted, with the student committee creating English and Spanish versions of the pledge for visibility in hallways. In celebration, students wore green or clothing with positive messages to further promote kindness and unity.
