Patchogue YMCA Director on 5K Benefit: 'It's just a fun day'

The Patchogue Family YMCA will host its annual 5K Run/Walk for a Cause on Saturday, April 5, offering participants a chance to stay active while supporting local families in need.

The event, which benefits the YMCA’s food distribution program, will take place rain or shine at Shorefront Park, 49 Smith St., beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding by noon.

YMCA Executive Director John Borromeo said the activity draws participants of all ages—from 5 to 78—and can also be done virtually for those not on Long Island.

“Whatever money we raise through the sponsorship of the runners basically funds our food distribution here at the Patchogue Family YMCA throughout the whole year,” Borromeo told South Shore Press. “We actually have a food distribution on the last Wednesday of each month here from 1 to 2 p.m., which basically helps our community that is less fortunate to make sure that they have some food for their family.”

Although the run/walk has an 11-year history, the food initiative is relatively new, emerging in response to economic hardships during COVID-19, Borromeo explained.

Today, approximately 50 to 60 families benefit from the Patchogue YMCA’s food distribution, he said. While the YMCA does not have space for a food pantry, it ensures families receive the healthiest food possible, including fresh produce. The funds raised during Saturday’s event will help make this possible, Borromeo said. They also help provide extras like turkeys for families on Thanksgiving.

Based on past experience, he anticipates Saturday’s event will attract 250 to 300 participants, not only from Patchogue but from surrounding areas like Bellport and Blue Point. With the virtual option, he said, “Anyone around the country really could participate.”

Since the event is designed to be fun as well as raise money, Borromeo noted that there is no requirement to run—participants can proceed at their own pace, walking if that feels more comfortable.

“It's really more like a family event,” he said. “It’s just a fun day.”

Those looking to take their involvement a step further can try the entire 8th Annual Run/Walk for a Cause series, which benefits Huntington, Glen Cove, Southeast Hampton, and Bay Shore as well. Dates for each of these events are listed on the website.
