Janet Hyunju Clarke, associate dean of research and learning at Stony Brook University Libraries, has been awarded the ALA Medal of Excellence Award. The American Library Association (ALA), in collaboration with global library organization OCLC, presents this annual award to honor creative leadership, particularly in library management and related fields.

The 2025 Medal of Excellence jury recognized Clarke for her role as the principal investigator of the Ready for Success project. This grant-funded initiative aims to integrate research skills into high school curricula by aiding teachers in using scaffolded lessons. The project has notably transformed research instruction at Brentwood High School on Long Island by teaching students to tackle research in manageable parts, fostering critical thinking and effective research capabilities.

Karim Boughida, dean of University Libraries, commended the recognition: “I am deeply pleased and proud that the ALA has recognized Janet’s work and contributions.” He highlighted the project's impact beyond academic success, preparing students, especially at economically disadvantaged Brentwood High School, with critical thinking skills necessary for college and life. This initiative is supported by the Pritchard Charitable Trust.

Clarke and her team employed a train-the-trainer approach, developing a curriculum to enhance teachers' knowledge of information literacy. Through class visits to Stony Brook, students engaged in practical applications of research skills, fostering a robust educational partnership. The initiative has built a new community of practice at Brentwood and eased students' transition to higher education. The team has also shared their insights at conferences and through the Ready for Success Summit, impacting over 1,200 educators and students on Long Island.

Sara Dallas, chair of the 2025 Medal of Excellence Award committee, acknowledged the project: “The award committee was impressed by this innovative and vital project that partnered the public high school and the Stony Brook University libraries.”

Under Clarke’s leadership, Ready for Success has bridged gaps between teachers, librarians, and administrators, reimagining research instruction across multiple educational levels. It strengthened ties between university and school libraries throughout the region. The 2025 Medal of Excellence will be awarded at the ALA President’s Program on June 29 at the ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia.
