Thomas Buffa honored as Suffolk County Commissioner of the Year

Commissioner and former Chief Thomas Buffa has been recognized as the 2024 Commissioner of the Year by the Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association. This accolade was presented during their annual installation dinner held on March 8, 2025.

Buffa's association with the Smithtown Fire Department spans 57 years, having joined on September 11, 1967. He served in the United States Navy beginning in 1970 and returned to continue his commitment to the department. Over the years, he advanced within Engine Company 1 and became its Captain from April 1978 to April 1979.

In April 1979, Buffa was elected Assistant Chief and served until 1985. Following this role, he was elected Chief of Department from April 1985 to April 1987. His service continued as he was elected Commissioner by Smithtown Fire District taxpayers in December 2000. Buffa remains in this position after being reelected for a fifth term last December.

The Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association is committed to educating and training fire commissioners across Suffolk County.
