Since its inception in 2011, the Stony Brook University Office of Sustainability has been dedicated to offering sustainable transportation options to reduce the university's carbon footprint. In collaboration with Mobility & Parking Services (MAPS), several initiatives have been introduced, including the Wolf Ride Bike Share program and an EV charging network on campus.
The partnership between these departments has resulted in significant achievements over the past year. Last September, Stony Brook achieved the highest organizational pledge count for a university in the 2024 Car Free Day Long Island competition. Additionally, SBU was designated a Silver Bicycle Friendly University in October, reflecting increased awareness and biking programs on campus.
These accomplishments are supported by data that highlight MAPS' environmental efforts. The Wolf Ride Bike Share program saw a 12.3 percent increase in rides from 2023, with 6,548 unique users participating. Transportation Demand Management Coordinator Greg Monaco attributed this to "improved user functionality of the PBSC app, new bike share signage and website, as well as improved bicycle repair and record keeping."

The EV Charging program also experienced growth since its introduction on campus in 2014. "The EV Charging program at Stony Brook had its most successful year to date in 2024, with a 38 percent increase in charging sessions from 2023," said Monaco. A rate review and an idle charging fee contributed to increased usage and revenue. Idle charging sessions decreased significantly from 54 percent in 2023 to 16 percent in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2025, MAPS plans to expand sustainable transportation options through potential partnerships with LIRR and rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft. The Office of Sustainability and MAPS are also exploring a fleet electrification study with NYPA and AECOM.
