Barbara Sapanaro honored on Fine Arts Wall of Distinction

Jennifer Heitman Board Member | William Floyd School District

Barbara (Slane) Sapanaro has been named a Fine Arts Wall of Distinction Honoree for 2025. From an early age, she was surrounded by music, a passion that continued throughout her life. Her sister, Nancy Slane, shared memories of their home filled with music and the joy it brought them.

At seven years old, Barbara began playing the piano and showcased her talent in school performances. During her time at William Floyd High School, she participated in various activities such as the Rockette dance team, cheerleading, and performing as an oboist and vocalist. She also played roles in high school musicals like "You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "Godspell," and was part of the marching band featured in the movie "Sweet Liberty." Barbara graduated from William Floyd High School in 1985.

She pursued higher education at SUNY Fredonia, earning a degree in Music Business with a minor in English. Her career began at EMI Music Publishing where she served as Director of Creative from 1992 to 2003. After over a decade in the industry, Barbara transitioned to teaching music.

In 2003, she started as a traveling music teacher before settling at John S. Hobart Elementary within the William Floyd School District. Over her 18-year tenure there, Barbara inspired many through her dedication to education and mentorship. She was known for going above and beyond for her students and colleagues alike—whether purchasing coats for those in need or dressing up to engage students creatively.

Barbara's influence extended beyond immediate teaching; she helped shape future educators and encouraged children to believe in themselves while striving for their full potential.
