You’ve heard of local law enforcement holding auctions where they sell off confiscated property from criminals like cars and boats.
Now New York State is in the “auction game” but what they’re selling and hoping you’re buying is much bigger and more expensive than automobiles or vessels.
The NYS Department of Transportation is selling big swaths of land in and around Suffolk County.
They are auctioning off four parcels of land—three located in Suffolk County and one in Nassau County—as part of the state’s Surplus Property Program, aimed at returning properties no longer needed.
In announcing the land sale, the NYS DOT understands the need to shift the parcels “to the hands of local citizens who can better care for and develop the land.”
According to the state, each parcel that is going to be auctioned off was acquired by the state for highway enhancements but is no longer needed for transportation purposes.
The public auction will be held on Wednesday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the NYSDOT Regional Office, located at Perry B. Duryea, Jr. State Office Building, 250 Veterans Memorial Highway (Basement Classrooms 2 and 3) in Hauppauge.
Prospective bidders must register in person prior to the auction beginning at 9:30 a.m. Building visitors will be subject to security screening and may need to present photo identification.
Properties at the following locations are expected to be sold:
* Adjacent to the south of 254 Henry Street, Town of Hempstead (Inwood), Nassau County,
* 4 Garfield Court, Town of Smithtown (Nesconset), Suffolk County,
* 150 Terry Road, Town of Smithtown (Hauppauge), Suffolk County,
* On West 23rd Street just west of State Route 110, Town of Huntington (Huntington Station), Suffolk County.
It is strongly recommended that bidders research local municipal zoning requirements before placing bids.
