Andrea Goldsmith appointed seventh president of Stony Brook University

Andrea Goldsmith has been appointed as the seventh president of Stony Brook University, as announced by The State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees Chairman Merryl H. Tisch and SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. Her appointment follows a unanimous vote by the SUNY Board and will be effective from August 1, 2025.

The SUNY Board of Trustees expressed confidence in Dr. Goldsmith's leadership abilities, stating, "Stony Brook University is a world-class institution known for its academic excellence and groundbreaking research...Dr. Goldsmith is the perfect choice to lead Stony Brook University’s next chapter."

Governor Kathy Hochul also congratulated Dr. Goldsmith on her new role: “Stony Brook is known for its groundbreaking research and exceptional academic programs...I believe she will undoubtedly serve Stony Brook admirably.”

Chancellor King highlighted Dr. Goldsmith’s extensive experience: “Dr. Andrea Goldsmith’s vast experience as a dean, faculty member, and researcher at R1 universities...makes her an extraordinary choice to lead this esteemed SUNY institution to new heights.”

In response to her appointment, Dr. Goldsmith stated, “Stony Brook’s commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and social mobility resonates profoundly with my values...I look forward to getting to know the Stony Brook community.”

As president, Dr. Goldsmith will oversee various aspects of the university including Stony Brook Medicine and partnerships like the management of Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Kevin Law from the Presidential Search Committee remarked on the selection process: “Dr. Goldsmith stood out as a leader with the vision, expertise, and dedication to take Stony Brook to new heights.”

Marilyn Simons praised Dr. Goldsmith's qualifications: “Her commitment to public education...qualifies her uniquely to lead Stony Brook at this time.”

Richard L. Gelfond emphasized her potential impact: “She has all the right qualities...and understands what it takes to continue our momentum forward.”

John Hennessy commended her accomplishments: “Her accomplishments as a researcher and entrepreneur are exceptional...Having had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Goldsmith for many years...I wish her continued success."

The announcement also included gratitude towards Dr. Richard McCormick for his service as interim president during this transition period.

Dr. Goldsmith holds several prestigious positions including Dean of Engineering at Princeton University and board memberships with Intel and Medtronic among others.

Her academic background includes degrees from U.C. Berkeley in engineering math and electrical engineering.

Dr. Goldsmith has contributed significantly through roles such as founding chair of IEEE’s Diversity Committee and serving on various boards within IEEE societies.
