William Floyd wrestling team shines with two champions advancing to county championships

WFHS Wrestling Team | WFSD

The William Floyd varsity boys' wrestling team, led by Coach Tony Mecca, achieved significant success at the recent League I championships. The team secured second place overall, with 10 wrestlers finishing in the top four positions and earning All-League status. This includes two league champions: Josiah Lors at 215 lbs. and Jayvyn Johnson at 138 lbs.

These athletes have qualified for the upcoming county championships scheduled to take place this weekend at Stony Brook University. Alongside the champions, David Barrera (116 lbs.), David Gonzalez (190 lbs.), Aaron Land (170 lbs.), and Jack Meyer (131 lbs.) earned second-place finishes. Antonio Martin (160 lbs.) and Rob Martinez (285 lbs.) took third place, while Caleb Holmes (124 lbs.) and Ryan Murtha (138 lbs.) finished in fourth place.

Jack Meyer received additional recognition by winning the Spartan Award for being the most outstanding wrestler in League I. As a result, he will be the flag-bearer at the county championships. Meyer's achievement follows a successful season where he consistently placed in the top three across various tournaments and reached his 100th career win—a milestone achieved by only seven wrestlers in William Floyd's history. Coach Mecca remarked that Meyer is on track to reach 115 wins, potentially making him the all-time win leader for William Floyd by his senior year.

Coach Mecca praised his student-athletes and coaching staff for their accomplishments and wished them luck in the county championships.

WFHS junior wrestler Jack Meyer celebrated his 100th win last December, becoming one of only seven wrestlers in program history to reach this mark. He is pictured with assistant coaches Brandon Croteau, Cosmo Stoia, Michael Murtha, Ray Passaro, and head coach Tony Mecca.
