Stony Brook Southampton is set to stage its first major theatrical production in years at the Avram Theater with the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom." The performance will run from January 30 to February 2, 2025. Tickets are available for $55.
The musical, adapted from Akil DuPont's 2010 short film, is set in 1850 and follows an enslaved man's journey on the Underground Railroad. It has been recognized with awards such as "Best Production Winner" at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.
Stony Brook Southampton will host two daytime performances for 600 local high school students as part of Black History Month activities. This initiative aims to educate students about American history.
Wendy Pearson, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Executive Director of Stony Brook Southampton, stated that productions like "Underground" reflect their commitment to making Stony Brook Southampton a hub for education and cultural enrichment. She emphasized the importance of partnerships with local businesses in supporting arts and community engagement.
The Avram Theater, named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and his wife Maria, has undergone renovations since its original opening in the 1980s. It now hosts various artistic events alongside its adjoining art gallery.
The production is presented by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC, with sponsorship from Southampton Inn.
