Smithtown donates surplus fire gear to support Kentucky firefighters

Andrew Kelly Second Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department

Smithtown Fire District has contributed surplus fire equipment to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund for distribution to fire departments in Kentucky. This donation follows the severe tornadoes that impacted Mayfield, Kentucky, and other areas, affecting local fire services and first responders.

The equipment provided includes over 10 sets of bunker gear, lighting equipment, gloves, nozzles, fans, and a Hurst "Jaws of Life" extrication tool. The Smithtown Fire District worked with the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund to facilitate this donation. The board of fire commissioners identified the opportunity to assist Kentucky's firefighters with unused equipment from their district.

Commissioner Michael McMahon stated, “That we stand ready to help our Smithtown community and Long Island neighbors as well as our brothers and sisters out of state.”

The Terry Farrell Fund is a nonprofit organization supporting fire departments and first responders nationwide. Brian Farrell founded the organization in memory of his brother Terry, an FDNY firefighter who died on September 11th. Brian Farrell and volunteers plan to transport the donated equipment to Kentucky on January 7th.
