Smithtown FD enhances rescue capabilities with new specialized operations vehicle

Andrew Kelly Second Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department

On February 1, 2020, the Smithtown Fire Department introduced a new vehicle to its fleet. The Ford F550 chassis with a Maintainer Custom Bodies box is designated as unit number 4-2-19. This vehicle will support Special Rescue Operations, focusing on Water and Ice Rescues, and serve as an addition to Rescue Co. 9's Heavy Rescue apparatus.

The new vehicle features a 13.5-foot Avon Web Inflatable Boat that can be quickly deployed in hard-to-reach areas within 60 seconds. It also carries a Honda 15Hp 4 Stroke Motor equipped with a lift system for safe storage and rapid deployment during emergencies. Additionally, the four-wheel-drive vehicle includes Fire Research SPA530-R14 Telescoping Lights and a 1200 lb winch to assist operations in local parks such as Caleb Smith State Park and Blydenburgh County Park.

Chief of Department Kevin Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of this addition: “With an increasing number of alarms relating to water emergencies, this vehicle better equips our response to these types of alarms.”

The vehicle also houses various equipment essential for rescue operations:

- Mustang Ice & Water Rescue Suits

- Mark 7 Ice Rescue Sled

- Rope Reel for Tag Lines

- Ice Rescue Sling

- Assorted Cribbing & Shoring Equipment

- (3) Scott 4500 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus

- Forcible Entry Equipment

- Portable Ventilation Fan

A ceremony took place at Smithtown Fire Department’s Main House where Commissioner Michael Felice handed over the keys to Chief Kevin J. Fitzpatrick. Also present were Commissioner Michael McMahon, Captain Matthew Creamer of Rescue Co. 9, Lieutenant Matthew Raia, and Truck Committee member Captain Michael Clarke.

Commissioner Felice stated, “It’s important for the residents of the district to know we are providing the latest equipment for the department to respond to their calls for assistance.”

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
