Smithtown Fire Department equips vehicles with sensory kits for autistic patients

Joseph Palazzo Third Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department

The Smithtown Fire Department has implemented a new initiative by equipping their ambulances and first responder vehicles with sensory kits. These kits are intended to aid in managing emergency situations involving individuals with autism, ADHD, and other sensory issues.

First responders often encounter heightened stress levels when responding to calls involving autistic individuals. The presence of emergency personnel can be overwhelming for those on the autism spectrum, potentially leading to atypical responses. Recognizing this challenge, the department has introduced these kits as an additional resource for EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters.

The sensory kits contain items designed to help calm individuals experiencing sensory overload during emergencies. Included in the kits are noise-reducing earmuffs, a dry erase board with markers, stress balls, fidget spinners, and various other fidget toys.

This move aims to enhance the ability of first responders to provide effective assistance during emergencies while being sensitive to the needs of those with sensory sensitivities.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
