The Town of Brookhaven has announced changes to its recycling schedule in light of the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management stated that there will be no recycling collection on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, both of which fall on Wednesdays this year. As a result, the regular Wednesday recycling collections will be rescheduled to the following Saturdays.
Specifically, Saturday, December 28 is designated as a Paper & Cardboard Recycling Day, while Saturday, January 4 will be for Plastic & Metal Recycling. Residents are reminded that many items from holiday celebrations can be recycled. These include cardboard boxes, plain wrapping paper, holiday cards, envelopes, and old paper gift bags. Such items should be placed out for collection on December 28.
Items like glittery wrapping paper, bows and ribbons, and Styrofoam packaging should not be recycled but instead disposed of with regular trash. Additionally, musical holiday cards require special attention; their batteries need to be removed before disposal at a battery recycling program.
