The Beacon House is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1994 by Frank Amalfitano, an Air Force veteran of Vietnam. Their headquarters is located at 1715 Union Blvd., Bay Shore, NY. It has established itself in veteran housing, outreach programs, and is known as a full service organization serving veterans on all of Long Island.
The Beacon House manages 52 housing sites throughout Nassau & Suffolk Counties offering three affordable supportive housing programs –emergency, transitional and permanent. Their residential programs provide stability and support to homeless veterans and veterans with families. During their time with the Beacon House the clients are assisted with developing individualized life plans that include helping them attain benefits, employment and the life skills and confidence needed to regain their independence.
The emergency and transitional housing assists single males and females. The permanent housing serves single males and veterans with families. They also provide permanent housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS through the HOPWA program. On May 19, 2016 the Beacon House took over the 42 bed Veterans Residence at Northport Veterans hospital from the Salvation Army. Northport VA director Philip Maschitta called the transition from the Salvation Army, which had run the shelter since 1997, to Beacon House, “a marriage made in heaven, we’re very pleased to be partnering with Beacon House. We’re worked together since 1999. Having a facility [for the homeless] on site, a veteran has access to all our programs, it eliminates Transportation problems and allows us to work together. It’s a place for them to go before the staff can get engaged.”

A wide range of supportive services are provided to both residents and non-resident clients in an effort to facilitate stabilization and independence. Assistance with service and non service connected benefits, nutritional assistance, pro bono legal services, transportation, job readiness and search, rental and utility arrears, medical locker, thrift shop, Holiday meals and gift assistance, referrals to health care services.
They offer one of the best civilian support for the veterans, and since the president and CEO is a veteran that knows our problems we can see why their help is so good.
Eligibility
Veterans must qualify for VA services and cannot be receiving case management through any other programs. ie: HUD, VASH, SSF, Care Coordination.
