New York State “wins” the dubious distinction of losing the most population out of any state in America, according to recently released data by the United States Census Bureau.
“This sad state of affairs is a direct reflection of radical progressive policies in New York. Taxes are up, crime is up, people don’t feel safe, the streets are dirty, and migrants have more rights and privileges than hard working taxpayers,” said New York State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar.
According to the Census Bureau, New York’s population dropped approximately 101,984, the largest loss in the United States. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Texas grew the most in America by 473,453 people, followed by Florida who experienced a gain of 365,205 people.
The population loss in New York would have been far worse if it weren’t for a net gain of 73,867 international migrants, as reported by the Empire Center.
Politicians from across New York quickly condemned the embarrassing population loss.
“Residents are tired of liberal politicians greedily and forcefully taking more money out of their pockets,” wrote New York State Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay on @X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Hardworking, law-abiding citizens are sick & tired of left-wing politicians putting illegal immigrants & criminals ahead of them,” Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis posted on @X.
The state of California was second to New York in population loss, with the Golden State population decreasing by 75,423.
This population loss hurts families in more ways than one.
The set amount of revenue collected by local governments, the local tax levy, remains the same. That levy is the total amount of taxes collected regardless of how many people live here.
The less people, the lower the population, means remaining families pay more to make up the difference to make that tax levy whole.
The number of Congressmembers in each state is based on population. The apportionment process takes place every ten years. Census data determines how many members of Congress each state is assigned based on population.
Right now New York has 26 members in Congress. The American Redistricting Project already predicts New York could lose three congressional seats when apportionment takes place in 2030. This means less influence in Washington to fight for the interests of New York families.
“Elections have consequences. We can’t unravel it with one election cycle. If we were to turn this around, it would take several, several years. You need a Republican governor and a balanced, competitive state legislature to see real change,” concluded Chairman Kassar.
