The Stony Brook University women's soccer team secured its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship by defeating Monmouth 2-1 on November 9. This victory propels the Seawolves into the NCAA Division I tournament, where they will face fourth seed Penn State in the first round.
Stony Brook's win marks their fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament. The upcoming match against the Nittany Lions is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, at University Park, Pennsylvania, with a game time of 6 pm. Fans can watch the match live on ESPN+.
The CAA title was clinched at home with goals from Linn Beck and Luciana Setteducate, alongside exceptional goalkeeping by Nicolette Pasquarella. Stony Brook led 1-0 at halftime and extended their lead to 2-0 until Monmouth scored in the 79th minute. Beck earned the Most Outstanding Player award for her performance, while Setteducate provided an assist for Beck's decisive goal in the second half.
Head Coach Tobias Bischof praised his team's efforts: "Credit to my staff who worked relentlessly all year! We prepared the team to play a more defensive game as we knew we had to take some space away from Monmouth’s offensive players," he said. "The team did an amazing job buying in and we scored two fantastic goals. I’m proud of every single player as it takes the whole team to win a championship."
Stony Brook concluded their CAA season with a record of 7-1-2 and holds an overall record of 14-3-3. Their opponents, Penn State, are ranked 22nd nationally. The Seawolves aim to secure their first-ever victory in an NCAA tournament match.
