On October 29, the Town of Brookhaven took action to demolish a "zombie house" at 18 Overlook Drive in Mastic Beach. Supervisor Dan Panico and Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig were present for the demolition of this vacant property. The house, initially constructed without permits, was left unfinished and became a neighborhood eyesore after suffering fire damage and partial reconstruction before being abandoned.
The Town acquired the property earlier this year with plans to preserve it as open space. In line with sustainability efforts, windows from the site were donated to Habitat for Humanity. Members of the Town's Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management participated in the demolition process.
The cleared property will now be maintained as open space by the Town, aiming to restore and protect the marshland area for community and environmental benefits.
Residents are encouraged to report blighted or abandoned properties by calling 631-451-TOWN (8696).
