The Stony Brook University community gathered for CommUniversity Day on Saturday, September 28. The event attracted nearly 2,500 attendees despite overcast skies and light showers. Participants explored various aspects of the campus through interactive activities, entertainment, and educational exhibits.
CommUniversity Day featured 90 tables and demonstrations organized into themed neighborhoods such as 'Tech and Discovery,' 'Arts,' and 'Community Partners.' Interim President Richard McCormick addressed the crowd, emphasizing the university's strong connection with the community. "The deep synergy between Stony Brook University and our community is strong," he said. "We’re so proud to be a part of this community."
Heather Banoub, assistant vice president for Community Relations, noted the event's success despite the weather. "To have such a wonderful turn-out in spite of the less than perfect weather is a testament to how CommUniversity Day has become a beloved tradition for our community," she stated.
In the 'Health' neighborhood, attendees participated in activities like balance testing with Physical Therapy students and heart health education from Heart Institute staff. Daphne Caceres-Paladino from the Heart Institute highlighted their focus on heart attack awareness: “This event is a great opportunity for us to reach out to the community.”
The 'Safety' neighborhood offered insights into emergency response techniques with equipment displays by the Stony Brook Fire Marshal. Attendees also enjoyed ‘Find Out in 15’ sessions where students presented research projects.
The 'Tech and Discovery' area included physics demonstrations by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Lisa Hernandez of Bayport expressed her enthusiasm: “I bring my kids each year.” Her son Joey added his enjoyment of free candy at the event.
A new feature this year was a LEGO® competition showcasing unique creations reflecting visions of community. Additionally, an Island Harvest Food Drive encouraged donations of nonperishable food items in exchange for cooler bags.
Banoub described various activities including musical performances and participation in health screenings: “From performances by cheerleading team...to participants in Health Neighborhood.”
CommUniversity Day coincided with Stony Brook Family Weekend and concluded with a football game against Morgan State Bears, which ended in a victory for Seawolves at 22-3.
