Rentas of Long Island Science Center on drone program: 'Wow is there a lot of interest'

Virtual reality headsets invite visitors at the Long Island Science Center to explore and discover. | Long Island Science Center

Fun and STEAM education go hand in hand at Long Island Science Center in Riverhead where flying a drone and virtual reality are among the most popular discoveries.

There are safety instructions for flying a drone, but children need not be certified to take a craft up in the air in one of two caged enclosures and through an obstacle course, said Program Director Judy Rentas.

“That’s probably one of the more popular programs,” she said. “We put some obstacles in there so that they can fly through the hoops and learn how to navigate the drones. That's basically just learning how to program and pilot their own drone. Wow is there a lot of interest.”

For younger children, drone flying must be done in the company of an adult. Although “in general, we’re a hands-on, self-guided museum,” a staff member will give the basics, Rentas said, like how to steer via remote control. Seating is also provided so “everyone can watch what’s happening.” The drone exhibit is one of many hands-on activities that families can discover at the center.

Virtual reality also draws the kids, who are empowered by headsets to choose their adventure from options like swimming with manatees, rediscovering dinosaurs and entering outer space, according to the website

Through programs like these and many others, Long Island Science Center is building kids’ strengths in STEAM subjects deemed vital for today’s technological world: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The fun takes place seven days a week from 11 to 5 p.m. in a pop-up location in the Riverhead Tanger Outlet Center (Suite 401). But the nonprofit is working on the creation of a permanent site in an empty storefront, which will feature a rooftop deck and observation area over Town Square and the Peconic River. Fundraising is now underway.

Besides programs at the Tanger Outlet, Long Island Science Center is also engaged in providing STEAM education and curriculum for schools, libraries and Scout programs throughout Long Island and the greater New York area.
