Christopher Doran, a 66-year-old resident of North Babylon, has been indicted for Attempted Robbery in the First Degree and related charges. The indictment follows allegations that Doran attempted to rob a woman he had hired to clean his apartment.
District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney commented on the case, stating, "The allegations in this case represent a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior. This defendant allegedly lured the unsuspecting victim to his home under false pretenses and then attempted to steal from her at knifepoint."
The investigation revealed that on September 2, 2024, Doran allegedly invited the victim to his apartment on Weeks Road in North Babylon for cleaning services. He then asked her to drive him to various locations between Bay Shore and Babylon under the pretense of retrieving cash for payment. When they arrived at a Chase Bank parking lot, Doran reportedly pulled out a knife and demanded money from the victim.
As the victim tried to escape from the car, Doran grabbed her. She managed to break free and locked herself inside her vehicle with Doran still inside. Unable to open the doors, Doran allegedly smashed a window with a hammer and fled. He was apprehended by Suffolk County Police officers on September 3, 2024.
Doran was arraigned on September 25, 2024, before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis on charges including Attempted Robbery in the First Degree (a Class C felony), Robbery in the Third Degree (a Class D felony), and Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree (a Class A misdemeanor). Justice Ambro set bail at $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $1 million partially secured bond.
Doran is scheduled to return to court on October 17, 2024. If convicted of the top count, he faces up to 16 years to life in prison. The Legal Aid Society is representing him.
Assistant District Attorney Scott Romano of the Major Crime Bureau is prosecuting this case. Detective John Caraccia of the Suffolk County Police Department conducted the investigation.
