Stony Brook University graduates inaugural class from 'Taste of the Trades' summer program
Graduates of the "Taste of the Trades" program, offered by Stony Brook University in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Suffolk County Community College, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs, have completed their seven-week summer course. Twenty rising high school seniors from NYSERDA-designated underserved school districts participated in hands-on learning experiences to prepare for careers in fields such as construction and energy transmission.

Former Stony Brook attorney sentenced for stealing over $800K from clients
Douglas Valente, 57, of Florida, the former principal attorney at the Valente Law Group based in Stony Brook, was sentenced to one and one-third to four years in prison for stealing more than $800,000 from three former clients by taking their money from his escrow account. The announcement was made by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.
Stony Brook completes third round focused on climate change under Tiger Teams Initiative

Coram man sentenced to ten years for firearm and narcotics possession
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Desmond Roberts, 32, of Coram, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. This follows his guilty plea in April to illegally possessing a loaded semi-automatic firearm and various narcotics found during a court-ordered search of his residence in June 2023.
Brookhaven Lab team studies "excitons" behavior in novel magnetic material
A research group led by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory has uncovered details about the formation and behavior of mobile, microscopic, particle-like objects called “excitons” in a class of materials known as van der Waals magnets. Their work helps establish a picture of the complex relationship between the optical and magnetic properties of these materials, which display intriguing characteristics that could one day lead to brand-new technologies based on magnetism, such as information storage.

One such infection is the Powassan virus (POWV). Erich Mackow, PhD, a virologist at Stony Brook University, is researching the neurological damage caused by POWV.
