Stony Brook engineering chair strengthens ties with Office of Naval Research

P. Scott Carney, the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University (SBU), visited the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Arlington, Virginia on July 15. The visit aimed to enhance collaboration between SBU and the U.S. Navy’s primary science and technology body.

Carney engaged with ONR program officers and members of the congressional affairs team to discuss how SBU's research capabilities can support the U.S. Navy's evolving needs. The meetings were facilitated by Stony Brook’s Office of Federal Relations, which is crucial in maintaining SBU's presence in Washington, D.C.

“This visit was a valuable opportunity to align Stony Brook’s world-class research strengths with the strategic priorities of the U.S. Navy,” stated Carney. “Our university has a proud legacy of driving innovation that makes a difference, and I am committed to strengthening our partnership with ONR to accelerate breakthroughs that enhance mission capability, survivability, cost-efficiency, and operational readiness.”

Stony Brook University conducts ONR-funded research that advances naval capabilities through projects in various fields such as robotics, cybersecurity, acoustics, oceanography, atmospheric science, and materials science.

The visit highlights SBU's dedication to research supporting national defense and U.S. service members. The university continues to build partnerships with federal agencies like ONR through its Office of Federal Relations.

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
