The Impact of Health-Related Issues and our Presidential Leadership

The ninth President was a tough Indian fighter, fought during the War of 1812, and was a governor of the Indiana Territory.  During his 1841 inaugural speech, President William Henry Harrison at fifty-eight years old gave a two-hour speech in the rain and cold and wore no jacket to keep him warm.  Later, he attended events to celebrate his presidency in wet clothing, and this hardened military and political leader was inflicted with pneumonia.   Almost forty years before Harrison, doctors used primitive measures that almost bled President George Washington to death, this same practice was unsuccessfully used for Harrison.

General US Grant's Movement to take Jackson, Mississippi "Vicksburg is the Key" – President Abraham Lincoln

Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was informed that McClernand understood little of how to wage war and was often difficult for Grant to manage.  Stanton directed Grant that he had the authority to handle his officers the way he saw fit.  During this fighting stretch, Grant strengthened his confidence to lead his soldiers and lead subordinates like McClernand.   At this moment, a former music teacher, turned cavalry leader, Colonel Benjamin H. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been a troubling condition that American combat service members have dealt with since the creation of this nation.  Years ago, there was virtually no treatment for veterans, as it is believed that 7 out of 100 veterans deal with PTSD related situations.  This medical and military situation was labeled as "shell shock" towards the challenging mental and physical conditions that hurt American service members.  Veterans were instructed not to speak about these situations and to simply "forget" about their war time encounters.

Long Island Military Vehicle Club's Proud Recognition of our Military History and Veterans

If these vehicles could speak, what stories would they have to share about the mobile military history that they display on our local roads.   The Long Island Military History Vehicle Club is based out of Bohemia, and it provides a great deal of patriotism to the veterans and families of this area.  There are about twenty members who operate military antique jeeps from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, Two and Half Ton Trucks, Hummers, World War II Bicycles and Motorcycles.  While this organization is based out of Bohemia, there is also a Nassau Chapter, who provide the same positive activities within their county.  During COVID-19, there was a brief respite towards the activities of this organization that was hampered by the pandemic, but now they have a full schedule of future dates to present their unique vehicles at local events.

The End of World War II in Europe - General Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Background

Some seventy-nine years ago this week, Eisenhower told German Wehrmacht representative Colonel General Alred Jodl, while the war was over, he was expected to follow the surrender and maintain the peace. There was no jubilation at this historic moment, only relief that this terrible war was over. Eisenhower had reached the pinnacle of military command as one of the highest ranking American officers who emerged to defeat the strength of Adolph Hitler's forces in Europe.
